Backflow prevention is a requirement for all residential, commercial and industrial developments that are connected to Sydney Water.
The term ‘backflow’ refers to when a contaminated source enters the clean drinking water supply. The water flows ‘back’ through the property into the Sydney Water mains.
This can occur as outlined in the following illustrations:
Therefore, it is of vital importance that adequate backflow prevention is used, especially as irrigation installers are responsible for any new installations that use Sydney Water.
Acceptable backflow prevention devices are an RPZ, testable Double Check Valve or a Dual Check Valve. A vacuum breaker is NOT a backflow prevention device.
All customers should be advised of these Sydney Water requirements. However, if the customer chooses not to install a backflow prevention device, fines may apply to the property owner.
In all situations, a backflow prevention device is required to be installed for council approval .
